Archaeological investigation, including monitoring, testing and survey, was undertaken at the Project Kells site located in Dublin City on the corner of Nassau Street and Dawson Street, for the construction of a six-storey over double-basement level mixed-use building. On-site work took place over 2019 and 2020 as the project progressed through the phases of site investigation, demolition, excavation, and rebuilding.
Test excavation took place on two separate occasions within the site investigation phase of works for the siting of a substation and guide trenches within the existing basement. No archaeological finds, material and/or features were revealed as a result of this exercise.
Archaeological monitoring also took place during the installation of the trench and during piling for the perimeter pile wall and for the bulk excavation works. No archaeological features, finds or soils were encountered during monitoring.

There were occasional broken red brick and timber inclusions but little evidence of domestic waste material such as pottery, glass, etc. other than two sherds of white glazed pottery and a fragment of red unglazed earthenware tile. No intact structural remains were found. The majority of the site was found to be previously disturbed by the presence of a basement. Once this structure was removed natural glacial/riverine deposit of slightly rounded stone, gravel and sand with no evidence of human activity were encountered. This area would have been subject to inundation prior to the historic development of the area. These inert deposits and the underlying limestone bedrock comprise the bulk of the excavated material.
Monitoring of St Patrick’s Well (DU018-020060) located in Trinity College took place from January 2021 to July 2021 during the bulk excavation and dewatering works associated with the permitted development; the structural engineers appointed to carry out this work concluded that there was no significant structural movement or damage to St Patrick’s Well.
