Monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out within the grounds of Gowrie House, 34 Upper Glenageary Road, Co. Dublin in response to a planning condition relating to the construction of eight houses within the grounds of Gowrie House, a protected structure.
The monitoring took place over six days in March 2020 and April 2021 and no features, finds or deposits of archaeological interest were identified.
The topsoil comprised dark black-brown humic topsoil with frequent modern inclusions and a depth of just 0.15m. The topsoil overlay a yellow-brown sandy silt natural subsoil with frequent granite boulder inclusions and intrusions from tree roots in places. Frequent modern material was present, both in spreads and deposited in pits across the area and comprised domestic rubbish including glass, iron, delph, clay pipe and fire rake-out (coal/ash etc.)
