13 test trenches were excavated in a site in two plots either side of the Rathmore road (Lusk by-pass). Two areas of archaeological interest were revealed. The first area to the west of the road comprised two features containing typical burnt mound material, i.e. heat-affected stone in a charcoal-rich soil. One was a deposit and the second, c. 1.5m to the west, may represent the fill of a shallow subsoil-cut feature or have simply accumulated in a natural hollow.
The second area to the east of the road comprised four deposits of burnt mound material and a pit, all filled with burnt mound material. Both areas represent the remains of a fulacht fia, a prehistoric site-type that used heated stone to produce hot/boiling water for one or a variety of domestic, industrial or ritual purposes.
