Archaeological monitoring and test trenching was carried out in March 2021 under an extension to licence 19E0677.
Prior to this, an Archaeological Impact Assessment was undertaken by Ed Lyne of Archaeological Consultancy Services Unit Ltd (ACSU) in April 2019. This recommended monitoring of any groundworks associated with any future development. Archaeological monitoring in the southern part of the site was undertaken by Donald Murphy of ACSU in November 2019. All demolition and sub-surface works associated with the development were monitored, including the breaking and removal of floor slabs and levelling of the grounds. This investigation exposed no archaeological features.
Archaeological monitoring and test trenching took place on 16 and 18 March 2021, using a 14-tonne tracked excavator. An area located at the west end of the site was stripped, exposing light brown clayey sand natural. The subsoil was found to consist of made-up and heavily disturbed ground (services included water mains, ESB and telecoms etc.). Subsequently, a total of three test trenches were excavated in the areas of made-up ground. Each trench measured 2.2m in width, and, in total, 137m of linear trenches were excavated. In general, the natural consisted of light to mid-brown and yellow silty clay with small gravel inclusions and was exposed at a depth between 0.5m to 2m. A number of modern rubbish pits were exposed.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified.
