Archaeological monitoring of groundworks (consisting of twelve trenches) was undertaken along St Eunan’s Terrace Water Mains Scheme (WMS) in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, in July and October 2021.
The scheme is situated to the east of Convent Road/Plunkett O’Boyle Terrace and is wholly located within the Zone of Archaeological Potential (ZAP) for the historic town of Letterkenny (DG053-042), which was established during the seventeenth-century plantation of Donegal. Main works involved the decommissioning of 171m of watermains that service properties located along St Eunan’s Terrace and installing 181m of new/replacement watermains within the existing road carriageway. The scheme forms part of an Irish Water nationwide programme to upgrade the existing water network.
No potential archaeological finds, features, or deposits were noted during the archaeological monitoring.
