The proposed works were located to the south of the existing Lakehouse Nursing home, Rockhill, Portnablagh, Co Donegal. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered in the testing of the proposed development site, which consisted of seven machine-dug trenches. The only features uncovered were of recent date, the older being the now-disused water pipeline which was constructed to run water from Sessiagh Lough to the Sheephaven Hotel. The hotel has long since been demolished to make way for housing and the metal pipe is now disused.
The other modern feature uncovered was the trench which contains the east–west running line of the sewage pipe. This pipeline is ‘active’ having been constructed possibly in the 1970s or 80s.
The other features of note were the relatively high level of the bedrock at the western end of the site, and the relatively shallow depth of topsoil across the whole of the development area. Together these factors would indicate that the field has not been actively ploughed in the recent past.
