A programme of archaeological testing carried out at St Johnstown, Lifford, Co. Donegal on behalf of The Board of Management St Baithin’s National School. The proposed development is south of the main core of the historic town of St Johnstown and within the zone of archaeological notification for the historic town, DG063-003----. Further to the north-east and to the rear of the existing school are DG063-003001- Church and DG063-003002- Graveyard.
The proposed development works entail the development of a new Astro-turf pitch with perimeter fencing and floodlighting and all associated site development works at the school, with provision for Phase 2 SEN school extension.
Archaeological testing took place on 23 September 2021 on foot of a request from the Donegal Planning Authority. A total of 9 linear test trenches were excavated at 10m intervals across the site.
No features of an archaeological nature were noted during testing. The proposed development will not impact on any known archaeological site or monument, neither will it have a visual impact on any archaeological monument.
