The proposed development of land at 30m south of 43A Glenshane Road consisted of the construction of a detached dwelling, with associated access and services.
HED (HM) noted in their planning response that the probable rath site (LDY036:001) adjacent to the proposed development is a likely example of an early medieval enclosed farmstead. The construction of foundations, service lines and access may negatively impact on such remains, should they survive.
In response the HED (HM) request for additional information, a phase of archaeological testing was proposed, to take the form of the machine excavation of six 1.5m wide test trenches, three 30m long trenches spaced evenly across the footprint of the house, two 20m long trenches along the line of the access and a 60m long trench in the area of the sewage treatment and outflow.
Only one feature of archaeological interest was noted, the line of a 19th-century farm track running in a dog-leg south from the existing cluster of farm buildings to the north of the proposal. This feature was picked up in two of the six trenches investigated.
