An extension to this licence was granted in October 2021 and further archaeological investigations were conducted in December 2021. An area approximately 9m x 7m was excavated immediately east of the castle, extending an area previously excavated a short distance further east. The excavation further confirmed what had previously been found, that four phases of revetting walls had been build along the steeply-sloping bedrock to create a level platform in the area immediately east of the castle. Artefacts found indicated that this work was no older than the 19th century. It was presumably related to the extensive renovations to the castle carried out around 1850, which included the insertion of a doorway in the east wall.
Further to the east of the castle the location of a proposed waste treatment facility was stripped of topsoil under archaeological supervision, as was a 30m x 9m area at the south-east corner of the castle grounds, where it is proposed to build new houses. No archaeology was found in either area.
