Pre-development archaeological test-trenching was undertaken for a proposed private dwelling in the townland of Ballymurphy North, Co. Cork. The proposed development was adjacent to CO085-112, a cillĂn (burial ground), situated within a small triangular piece of ground at the nearby crossroads.
Nine test-trenches were excavated within the proposed development area. One potential archaeological feature was uncovered in Trench 1 near the northern field boundary, comprising a shallow pit (F1) filled with burnt stone and charcoal-enriched silt. A north-east/south-west linear ditch or drain (F2) was revealed in Trench 5, with the same feature exposed in Trenches 6 and 7. A second ditch or drain (F3) was revealed in Trench 7 that was also uncovered in Trench 8. These are likely agricultural in nature, possibly relating to linear land drains. No other archaeological features, human remains or artefacts were recovered from the remaining test trenches.
