Test excavation was a requirement in relation to a planning application made for a small housing development. The land is immediately south of a local road on the eastern edge of Castletownberehaven, with views over the harbour and Bere Island. The land was c.1ha in extent made up of two areas of rough grazing, divided by an open drain, lined by trees. It consisted of rough grazing, overgrown with briars, rushes and sally trees.
Eight test trenches were excavated 10m apart and c.300m in total length. The general stratigraphy changed from a thin layer of peat covering bedrock, large rocks and white marl in the southern half to c.0.3m of a silty grey topsoil overlying grey gravels further north. No archaeology was found.
