Hawkes Archaeological Services was commissioned to study the impact, if any, on the archaeological and historical resource of the proposed development of a private dwelling to be constructed near a recorded monument (CO058-042001-2) in the townland of Baile Mhic Íre, Co. Cork.
Six test-trenches were excavated within the proposed development area outside a 20m buffer zone of the ringfort. No archaeological features or deposits were uncovered. Three linear land drains dating to the 19th century were discovered at the western ends of Trenches 1, 3, 4 and 5, one of which traversed all four trenches running north-south. They were roughly lined with stone and most filled with water upon excavation. These agricultural features were originally constructed for drainage and are not considered to be of archaeological significance.
