The development consists largely of embankment works along the western bank of the River Fergus, south-east of the outer reaches of Ennis town, approximately 1.5km north of Clarecastle village. Monitoring during embankment construction between 2019 and 2021 revealed seven post-medieval brick-making clamps (kilns), along with three brick dumps, on the western bank of the River Fergus behind the existing flood embankment and back-drain. These clamps are evidence of a substantial post-medieval brick-manufacturing industry to the immediate south of Ennis.
The clamps have been excavated under a separate consent number (E004600) and the excavation results have been published (Hull and Hurley 2020).
