Monitoring of groundworks associated with a 2.57ha residential development site at Rosslevan, Tulla Road, Ennis, Co. Clare, encountered nothing of archaeological significance.
The site is located on the northern edge of existing housing developments, north-west of the former Rosslevan House. Prior to the commencement of construction works the site was largely a single pasture field bounded by stone walls, with a small separate tree-lined field at the south-east. Ground levels varied enormously within the site; a deep south-west to north-east aligned valley occupied the centre of the site, with an area of high ground at the south-west and two smaller rises at the north-west and north-east. The south-eastern field was lower and level and had clearly been previously disturbed by development works in the neighbourhood.

In order to create a level construction site, the higher parts of the fields were excavated and the material used to fill the central valley. As a result only those parts of the site which were reduced in level were fully stripped of topsoil. Natural subsoil was not observed in any of the lower central and south-western parts of the field which appeared to contain a layer of alluvium/colluvium beneath the topsoil.
