Archaeological monitoring and excavation of three burnt spreads and the preservation in situ of a further three burnt spreads was undertaken at Illaunyregan 1 in Illaunyregan townland, Co. Clare as part of the Springfield Flood Relief Scheme. Archaeological monitoring for this scheme involved monitoring the excavation of streambeds subjected to wade and metal detection surveys (Licence Numbers 21D0048 & 21R0093), as well as monitoring of topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of an 850m-long flood embankment (Works Area 1–4). The latter work started on 24 August 2021 and resulted in the identification of six burnt spreads (Burnt Spreads 1–6) in Works Area 2 in late August 2021. Due to engineering constraints related to embankment construction three burnt spreads (Burnt Spreads 2–4) were fully excavated in order to facilitate the development and three burnt spreads (Burnt Spreads 1, 5 and 6) were preserved in situ.
The excavation was carried out from 27-29 September 2021, and the area investigated measured 181.5m².
Further archaeological monitoring is programmed for this scheme in 2022 and post-excavation works and reporting are also due to be completed in 2022.
