Office of Public Works flood alleviation works were carried out on stretch of the banks of the River Fergus, Bank Place, Lifford, Ennis, Co. Clare in an area of high archaeological potential close to the historic core of the town.
Monitoring during groundworks did not reveal any archaeological evidence. It should be noted that, due to the depth of overburden, mechanical stripping on the river edge did not reach the level of underlying natural geological deposits. The works had no observed impact on known or previously unknown archaeological remains, however it is still possible that archaeological material is present at depth on the riverbank. A number of metal items were identified during the metal detection survey, however these were all modern and were not retained.
