Archaeological monitoring of groundworks was carried out in June and July 2021 for the northernmost 250m of St Phelim’s Water Mains Scheme (WMS), in Cavan town. The St Phelim’s WMS was situated to the southwest of Cavan town centre along existing local roads (St Phelim’s Place and Kilnavaragh Lane/Military Row).
An archaeological impact assessment highlighted that a small section of the Zone of Archaeological Potential for the historic town of Cavan (CV020-055) would be directly impacted by the proposed scheme route. An area of archaeological potential was also identified consisting of the site of a former roadway marked on the first-edition Ordnance Survey (OS) map (1837).
Seven small trenches were excavated under archaeological supervision to facilitate directional drilling or to find existing services beneath the western side of the road.
No archaeological finds, features, or deposits were found.
