Archaeological test excavations were carried out as part of an archaeological impact assessment in association with an application (Planning Ref. P19/313) for the proposed development of 4 industrial buildings at Kilree, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow.

The proposed development site is located on the northern bank of the River Barrow, on the edge of Bagenalstown Industrial Park, approximately 1.5km south-west of Main Street, Bagenalstown. Access to the site is from the industrial park, from the north-west. The site is bounded to the south-west by the River Barrow and to the south-east by the Dublin-Waterford railway line. To the north, hedgerows bound the site, and adjacent land use is a mixture of housing and light industry. The site was level and largely greenfield.

29 test trenches were excavated across the site. Trenches were 2m in width, 15-120m in length and 0.2-0.7m in depth. The general stratigraphy across the site comprised 0.15-0.4m of topsoil overlying mid yellow-brown sand with occasional areas of sandy gravel and mid-brown sandy clay.

No archaeological features, finds or deposits were found during testing.
