Archaeological test trenching was carried out in relation to a proposed structural extension to the existing facility to provide additional offices as well as an extension to the car park at 17a Derrycoose Road, Portadown, Co. Armagh in response to planning conditions imposed upon grant of planning with specific reference to the site being located within the environs of recorded monument ARM04:002, indicating a high potential for archaeological activity and surviving sub-surface archaeological remains relating to the enclosure.
Three machine-dug test trenches were placed across the proposed car park area under archaeological supervision. Excavation of the test trenches confirmed that topsoil directly overlay an orange-grey natural glacial till subsoil to a depth of between 0.1–0.4m, getting deeper towards the south-east portion of the site. Fragments of red brick and crushed mortar were noted siting directly on top of subsoil within Test Trench 1 & 2, this being associated with an old laneway which had extended across this portion of the site as noted on the 19th-century and early 20th-century historic maps
Excavation of the trenches did not identify any archaeological remains.
