The initial Programme of Works recommended that 33 test trenches be mechanically excavated under archaeological supervision across the Phase 2 area of the site.
Twenty-eight test trenches were mechanically excavated in 2019 under archaeological supervision, no archaeological material was uncovered. At that time the topsoil was being stored on site so the area under the spoil heap, where the final 5 trenches were to be located, could not be tested.
In February 2021 the spoil heap was removed, and a new archaeological licence was obtained (AE/21/026) to undertake the mechanical excavation under archaeological supervision of the remaining 5 test trenches. The trenches were excavated on 22 February 2021; no archaeological material was uncovered.
