Two test trenches were mechanically excavated under archaeological supervision here. Trench 1 was excavated parallel to the line of the rear wall of the proposed building; its purpose was to target the main invasive works for the proposed building. Due to health and safety concerns it was only possible to excavate 8m of the trench.
Trench 2 ran perpendicular to Trench 1. Within the south-eastern end of the trench, a large subsoil-cut pit feature was identified and excavated. The pit was 3.9m wide and a 1.3m deep pit. A medieval iron rushlight holder and sherd of medieval pottery were recovered from the basal fill of the pit. Pottery, glass, and clay pipe from this upper fill indicate that it was 17th century in date.
