Due to consistently high visitor numbers to the area around the South Cairn (ARM028:007) on the summit of Slieve Gullion, the paths have become very worn and rutted in places. It was proposed to undertake some remedial works on the worst affected sections of the path around the west side of the cairn, but avoiding the cairn itself. In consultation with HED, it was agreed that this work could be undertaken with the attendance of a licensed archaeologist to monitor the works.

Some 35m of paths were formalized running around the western side of the cairn. Works involved a mix of lengths of shallow de-turfing and stone deposition directly on existing ground surface.

Nothing of archaeological interest was noted in the course of the works which were monitored between 15 and 19 March 2021.
