An archaeological evaluation in the form of pre-development test trenching was carried out in relation to a proposed housing development located at the site of former Corran Primary School, Blackcave Road North, Larne, Co. Antrim. A previous Cultural Heritage Assessment identified the site as being located within an archaeological landscape with particular reference to the siting of a recorded monument (ANT035:056) within the site boundaries. The exact nature and extent of the archaeological monument remains uncertain resulting in a request from DfC: HED for more information under PPS6 BH3. Therefore, an archaeological evaluation in the form of test trenching was carried out in order to establish whether archaeological remains survive.
A total of 6 test trenches were excavated across the development site. Archaeological test trenching revealed between 0.2–0.3m of topsoil across the site, largely overlying modern infill material with subsoil identified between 0.8–1m depth, consisting generally of an orange/brown boulder clay with blue/grey silt deposits noted within the eastern extent of the site. Varying depths of infill material were noted between the topsoil and subsoil horizons, consisting of soil-mixed modern building material. Within Test Trench 3 the remains of a modern tarmac surface and kerb were uncovered while a rubbish pit containing tree debris, metal oil cans and modern refuse was uncovered within Test Trench 1. No archaeological remains survive.
