Archaeological test trenching was carried at the site of a proposed residential dwelling at lands 140m east of 37 Clontrace Road, Broughshane, Co. Antrim in response to an archaeological condition imposed upon grant of planning under planning policy guidelines PPS6 BH4.
A desk-based study confirmed that the site is situated adjacent to the scheduled monument Ballymena Fort (ANT033:008), which is an example of a medieval motte and bailey. Pre-development archaeological test trenching was carried out in order to established whether any archaeological remains associated with the monument survive and to provide sufficient information for DfC: HED to make an informed planning decision.
A total of 4 machine-cut trenches were excavated within the development area under archaeological supervision. No archaeological material was identified during the test trenching works.
