An archaeological impact assessment with test trenching took place at the site of a proposed single storey dwelling house, garage and associated site works at Ballintemple, Woodenbridge, County Wicklow. Planning was granted by Wicklow County Council on the 6 April 2020 subject to 13 conditions (Planning Ref 19/1355).
The proposed development site is located 122m south-east of W1040-012-, a church site. Although no trace of the church survives today it was visible on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a quadrangular enclosure. The site where it once stood is today is known as ‘the Church Field’. Ballintemple ecclesiastical enclosure and associated features are located 528m to the north-west of the development site.
Condition 13 (a-e) for an archaeological impact assessment with test trenching was issued with the final grant of planning. Test trenching was carried out within the footprint of the development site. Three test trenches were excavated on 25 June 2020. The trenches were excavated by a 13t tracked machine with a flat grading bucket. No finds or features were exposed in any of the three trenches excavated.
