Archaeological monitoring was undertaken at thirteen locations during the construction of the N25 New Ross Bypass PPP Scheme between 9 July 2016 and 19 June 2020.
A total of three archaeological sites were discovered during monitoring at UTA-08, UTA-17/18 and UTA-25, all of which were subject to full resolution in advance of construction; separate licence numbers were sought and granted for the excavation of the identified archaeological remains (E004783; E004869; E004891). A total of eight structures or features of built heritage were identified during monitoring. These were surveyed and fully recorded in advance of construction, and preserved by record or (where possible) in situ. The built heritage included three bridges (of one-pier, two-pier, and two-rounded arch stone construction), two stone-built buildings (a domestic house and out-house or shed), a stone retaining wall and a mortared cylindrical pillar, a dry-stone revetment for a (townland boundary) ditch, a small riverside dry-stone structure of uncertain function and origin, and finally a modern well. Most of the larger features were cartographically dated to the mid-late 19th century or later.
Nothing else of archaeological significance was revealed during monitoring of demolition of the structures.
