Archaeological monitoring of all ground works was carried out at Church Lane, Market Square, Gorey, Co. Wexford. Monitoring took place following demolition of the buildings.
Directly beneath the floor of the buildings natural gravels (C1) were exposed. The foundations (C3) were extremely shallow and measured less than 0.2m in depth. Two trenches were excavated to a depth of 0.4m – 0.5m in order to ensure that exposed gravels were of natural origin. Towards the north end of the site natural yellowish-brown boulder clay (C1) was exposed. Modern wastewater pipes that serviced the demolished buildings were exposed (C4).
The investigation exposed no archaeological features, structures, deposits or finds. The work is now complete and no further archaeological work is recommended.
