A programme of archaeological monitoring undertaken at Butchers Lane. The site lies within the zone of notification for the historic city of Waterford (WA009-005), and there are a number of recorded monuments in the area, four of which are within c. 100m. These comprise the former site of St Stephen's church (WA009-005026) and the associated (surviving) graveyard (WA009-005119), a leper hospital (WA009-005035) also associated with St Stephen's and a 17th-century house (WA009-005038).
Archaeological monitoring took place from 7 to 9 December. One L-shaped trench was excavated, measuring 28m long. The trench fill consisted of a mid-brown silty clay which contained a large amount of modern rubble and underground services such as water pipes, gas mains and ESB wiring.
No archaeological finds or features were found over the course of archaeological monitoring.
