Testing took place in two places in High Street, Waterford: the yard of the former Sorting Office and the basement of the building at the corner of High Street/Henrietta Street. The former yielded evidence for a collection of scrap metal for a former foundry shown on 19th-century maps, overlying the backfilled cellars from houses which formerly fronted High Street prior to its widening in the late 19th century. At least one of these was originally barrel-vaulted.
The basement under the corner building at the north-east end of High Street (see photo) was tested to check the feasibility of lowering the floor to increase headroom in the event of the area being used for the public. A floor surface was exposed in all trenches at a depth of 0.46m below the present surface of hardened mortar-rich soil. The original floor was a stony or roughly cobbled surface infused with mortar. This was left intact.
