The proposed development consists of the erection of single storey dwelling, garage and associated services, in the townland of Ramakan, some 1.4km north of Sixmilecross, Co Tyrone. Access to the site will be via an existing track. The site, which extends to some 0.2ha, consists of a roughly rectangular area within an agricultural field, with the site of a rath (TYR044:031) located close by to the south-east.
As the application site was located next to the site of a rath there was an increased potential for buried archaeological remains to be uncovered during site works.
The entire development site was tested via a series of five machine-dug test trenches, which took place on 24 January 2020.
Three trenches were positioned to test the footprint of the proposed house and garage. The other two trenches were located so as to test the route of the percolation and run-off areas, which are planned to run southwards from the south-east corner of the development area.
A combination of field drains and significant levels of plough-truncation meant that nothing of archaeological significance survived on site.
