A programme of test trenching was undertaken on the site of a planned extension to a piggery. A tracked mechanical excavator was used to excavate 277m of test trenches across the site. The central and western parts of the site (Trenches 1, 2 & 3) were characterised by dark soils overlying pale, poorly-drained subsoils, whereas the higher eastern part of the site (Trenches 4 & 5) was characterised by well-drained and fertile soils.
Two features of interest were noted during the test-trenching programme – a shallow ditch which once defined the boundary of an early modern formal garden or parterre, and a small pit within the limits of the formal garden which is not considered to be of archaeological significance.
