Stage (iii) Excavations were undertaken at Lugnagall 2 as part of the N16 Lugatober (Drumkilsellagh to Lugnagall) Road Project, Co. Sligo. Lugnagall 2 was discovered at the northern end of the scheme during advance Stage (i)a Test Excavations undertaken in 2020 by Archaeological Management Solutions (Dowling and McKee 2020; Registration No.: E005188; Ministerial Consent Ref.: A079).
The on-site Stage (iii) Excavation Services at Lugnagall 2 were undertaken on 23 November 2020. The site consisted of a layer of moderately compacted, charcoal-rich silty clay and frequent heat-shattered stone that extended outside the western boundary of the road corridor. Where excavated, it measured approximately 1.75m by 1.85m. It survived to a depth of 0.3m and sealed a sub-rectangular pit/trough (c.2m by 1.65m and 0.3m deep). No artefacts or ecofacts were found during the investigations. Bulk soil samples were retrieved from the burnt spread for subsequent environmental and lipid analyses, should suitable remains be present.
Although presently undated, the burnt spread may relate to prehistoric subsistence and/or other specialised activities. Lugnagall 2 was located 270m north of a second burnt spread at Lugnagall 1, which was also identified as part of the N16 Road Project. Several small spreads of burnt material and potentially associated pits/troughs were also discovered at the site of Lugatober 1, about 1.3km to the south.
