Stage (iii) Excavations were undertaken at Lugatober 5 as part of the N16 Lugatober (Drumkilsellagh to Lugnagall) Road Project, Co. Sligo. Lugatober 5 consisted of a series of pits and post-holes. The excavation of the site was assessed during Stage (i)a Test Excavations undertaken in 2020 by Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) Ltd (Dowling and McKee 2020; Registration No.: E005188; Ministerial Consent Ref.: A079).
The on-site Stage (iii) Excavation Services at Lugatober 5 were conducted from 16 to 27 November 2020.
Excavations revealed 13 pits, 7 post/stake-holes and four hearths. The features were spread out over 4 cuttings with little stratigraphic relationship. The majority of features lay in Cutting A in two clusters separated by the line of a paleochannel. The feature fills contained charcoal flecks and occasional small fragments of burnt bone but did not suggest a function beyond general domestic. None of the features suggested a defined structure. The site is likely to extend to the west outside the roadtake. A single find of a flint scraper (E5285:1) suggest a prehistoric date and possible association with adjacent sites on the same scheme.
