Stage (iii) Excavations were undertaken at Lugatober 2 (Registration Nos: E005298, R00544) as part of the N16 Lugatober (Drumkilsellagh to Lugnagall) Road Project, Co. Sligo. Lugatober 2 consisted of the remains of three vernacular structures, comprising a house or farmstead and two outbuildings or possible sheds. The extent of the site was assessed during Stage (i)a Test Excavations undertaken in 2020 by Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) Ltd (Dowling and McKee 2020; Registration No.: E005188; Ministerial Consent Ref.: A079).
The on-site Stage (iii) Excavation Services at Lugatober 2 were conducted from 7 to 11 December 2020. The remains of a levelled building, measuring about 12m in length (north-east/south-west) and 3.05m in width, were identified. This is the vernacular structure or farmstead depicted at this location on the first-edition six-inch OS Map (1838). Two further structures were also excavated in the immediate area of the main building and may represent the two outbuildings or sheds marked on the first-edition 25-inch OS Map (1912). According to local information, the house and outbuildings were demolished in the 1950s.
Lugatober 2 is one of two vernacular buildings excavated as part of the present project. The other site, at Castlegal 1, lies about 600m to the south.
