Archaeological monitoring of upgrading and enhancement work to the former Clarence Hotel at Wine Street, Sligo town, was undertaken on 4 and 5 August 2020. The development is within the zone of archaeological potential for SL014-065--- Historic Town.
An area of approximately 17m east to west by approximately 5m in front of the building was excavated ahead of resurfacing to add a wheelchair accessible ramp and to replace the existing cobble-lock stone surface, along with associated drainage works.
Following the mechanical removal of the existing ground surface the area was excavated to a depth of c. 0.3m from the gable wall of the adjoining property (Nice Price retail store) for c. 12m in a western direction. The ground consisted of modern cobble-lock stone over gravel which overlay a subsoil of brownish-grey clay, with some inclusions of small stones. Several service pipes were encountered below the surface including a modern watermains pipe.
Nothing of archaeological significance was found during the course of monitoring.
