A programme of pre-development test trenching for a dwelling house at Rathonoragh Co. Sligo was undertaken on September 25, 2020. The site is partially within the zone of archaeological notification of SL014-059—- Ringfort Rath.
Six parallel trenches, at 5m intervals, were mechanically excavated using a graded bucket 1.9m wide in the footprint of the proposed dwelling, driveway, and associated works. The total area excavated comprised 150.67m of trench. All trenches were excavated to the top of archaeological material or the boulder clay. Depths of soil cover varied across the site with an average depth of 0.4m.
No archaeological material was identified within the proposed development area during the test trenching works.
