Leggatinty 5 was excavated in advance of construction of the N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramoge Road Project in County Roscommon by Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) for Roscommon County Council (RCC) and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). The site consisted of a burnt spread. It was identified during Stage (i)a Standard Test Excavations, carried out by AMS under Ministerial Direction (Direction No. A077, Registration No. E5070; Hardy 2021).
The spread consisted of a moderately compact greyish-black charcoal-rich sandy clay containing heat-shattered stone, 10.5m by 8.3m in plan and a maximum of 0.3m deep. No cut features were identified. A sample of alder charcoal from the burnt spread was dated to the Early Bronze Age, 1866–1613 cal. BC (UBA-46769, 3395±30BP). No artefacts were found during the investigation. Palaeo-environmental analysis of the burnt spread identified charred wood macro-remains of oak, ash, alder and willow.
