Leggatinty 1 was excavated in advance of construction of the N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramoge Road Project in County Roscommon by Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) for Roscommon County Council (RCC) and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). It was identified during Stage (i)a Test Excavations, carried out by AMS under Ministerial Direction (Direction No. A077, Registration No. E5070; Hardy 2021).

The archaeological remains consisted of a spread of charcoal-rich soil and heat-shattered stone, a trough and a single stake-hole. The trough was subcircular in plan, 0.98m long, 0.94m wide, 0.2m deep and there was no evidence that it was lined. A sample of alder charcoal from its fill returned a Late Bronze Age date of 1221–1016 cal. BC (UBA-47431; 2931±29BP). A single vertically projecting stake-hole was located c.0.2m northeast of the trough which may have served to mark the location of the trough or to support a structure associated with its use. Both features were covered by the burnt spread.

The spread consisted of charcoal-rich soil and heat-shattered red sandstone. Its exposed portion was of a substantial size, 15.9m by 10.3m in plan and up to 0.26m deep. The spread continued outside of the Compulsory Purchase Order line, so its full extent could not be ascertained and further associated remains are preserved in situ outside of the limit of excavation. Charred wood macro-remains from the spread comprised ash, oak, hazel, holly and blackthorn/cherry.

No artefacts were found during the investigation.
