A limited programme of archaeological survey and recording was conducted at a ringfort (RO007-010) located in the townland of Lustia, Co. Roscommon, in June 2020. The fieldwork was prompted by recent groundworks, involving the digging of drains and borrow pits, which was conducted in advance of forest re-planting and resulted in damage to the ringfort and its immediate environs. The archaeological investigations were designed to mitigate and as far as is reasonably practicable ameliorate the damage to the ringfort. These works included plan and section recording of the location and extent of the drains and borrow pits and GPS and metal detection surveys; the latter was carried out under licence 20R0100. The backfilling of the recently excavated features in the immediate area of the ringfort was also carefully monitored.
The archaeological interventions at Lustia ringfort has resulted in a baseline survey of the damage caused to the monument and its defining boundary. The monitored backfilling of the excavated features has, as far as possible, restored the site to its original appearance, to include restoration of a damaged section of the ringfort bank on the west. No artefacts of potential archaeological interest were recorded during the metal detection or other surveys conducted as part of these investigations.
