A programme of archaeological test trenching was carried out in the townland of Duffsland in relation to a residential development at Commons Road, Navan, Co. Meath.

The proposed development site consists of two fields, to the north (Phase 2) and south (Phase 1). The southern part of the proposed development (Phase 1) was tested in May 2018. No archaeological features or deposits were exposed. The second assessment was carried out in order to assess the archaeological potential of the Phase 2 area to the north under an extension to the original licence.

Test trenching was carried out on the site on 14 February 2020 using a 14-tonne tracked excavator. A total of six test trenches measuring 1.8m in width were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development. In total, 486m of linear trenches were excavated. The sod and topsoil (C1) consisted of a mid-dark brown clay. It measured 0.2-0.3m in thickness and lay directly above the natural orange sandy clay (C2).

No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified and no finds were recovered.
