Due to the size of the development (2.74 hectares) and the potential to discover archaeological remains, it was recommended that a programme of pre-development archaeological testing be undertaken within a proposed development site at Kilmore, Kilkelly, Co Mayo. The development area measured 150m east-west at its widest point by 275m. To the south and west of the site the ground had been artificially raised with infill tar and dump material from a local housing development. A settlement pond now rests to the north of the site and heavy afforestation is to the northeast. Power lines run north-south along the eastern extent of the site. No test trenches could be excavated in these areas.

Four test trenches were strategically placed to cover as much of the ground as possible. Trench 1 was excavated to a length of 60m, Trench 2 – 40m, Trench 3 – 40m and Trench 4 – 20m.  No artefacts or environmental evidence were revealed during the test trenching exercise.
