The author was commissioned by Wills Bros. Ltd. to undertake a programme of archaeological testing of the site of a proposed Topsoil Storage Area (TSA09) at Cloondeash Townland, Co. Mayo. The TSA at Cloondeash East is located 3.5km to the southwest of Castlebar, to the immediate south of the new N5 road corridor.

Testing was carried out on 21 October 2020. Six test trenches were excavated at the site in cloudy and showery conditions.

In general, the stratigraphy throughout comprised a homogenous mid-brown sandy silty topsoil and sod ranging in depth from 100–500mm overlying a natural compact, coarse mixed yellowish to mid-brown sandy subsoil with patches of blackened clay and patches of reddened clay with occasional outcrops of bedrock. Within the southern field deposits of peaty material and modern rubble and dumped materials were encountered.

Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during testing.
