Archaeological excavation and monitoring was carried out within the historic town of Killala and its environs. The excavation phase commenced on 12 March 2019 and was completed on 24 May 2019. Monitoring commenced in August 2019 and was complete by February 2020. The excavation site, between Georges Street East and Sea View Terrace, is near an extensive medieval burial ground comprising 89 burials excavated by Suzanne Zajac in 2016 (16E0309; Zajac 2016). It was envisaged that medieval archaeological remains might be encountered in the course of this project. That did not materialise. Nevertheless, a possible kiln and several early modern and later historic walls, cobble surfaces and drains of considerable local significance were encountered. These were recorded and associated artefacts were retained.
