Archaeological monitoring took place in the grounds of St Mary’s Church, erected in the nineteenth century in the centre of Ballinrobe town. An earlier church, first mentioned in 1413, originally occupied the site (Bradley and Dunne, 1989, 20). The Church and grounds, which also includes a graveyard, is now owned by Mayo County Council. Landscaping of the area took place over three months. It involved mechanical excavation, through fill, to a depth of 1m in two confined areas, just north-east of the church and adjacent to an access road. The midshaft of an adult femur was uncovered in the process and returned a radiocarbon date of 1450–1528 Cal AD.
