Archaeological test trenching was carried out along the route of the N59 Westport to Mulranny Road Scheme, Co. Mayo – Derradda to Newport Section, on behalf of Mayo County Council/Transport Infrastructure Ireland. The testing examined a total area of 4,524.45 m² and revealed a burnt stone deposit likely to represent a prehistoric fulachta fiadh (Corraunboy 1) and a pit containing iron slag (Derradda 1) that is currently undated.
Archaeological excavation of the two sites will be undertaken in 2021.
Metal detection (20R0230) located a discrete cluster of .303 caliber bullet cases on the outskirts of Newport town that likely represent an incidence of violence in the early 1920s.
