Monitoring of groundworks at a development at Glebe Street in Ballinrobe, County Mayo was carried out on 3 and 8 June 2020. The project consisted of the demolition of a rear extension and the construction of a new extension onto the rear of an existing dwelling house. The monitoring of groundworks was a condition of the planning permission and was necessary due to the location of the development site within the constraint for Ballinrobe (MA118-022).
The dwelling was part of a terrace of two-storey dwelling houses facing onto Glebe Street with a 20th-century extension to the rear. The groundworks were those associated with the construction of the new extension and a domestic store at the southern end of the site.
An area measuring 10m north-south by 7m and 0.7-0.8m deep was excavated for the extension. On the surface was a concrete floor, which measured 0.15m thick. Below the concrete was rubble fill, which measured up to 0.4m thick and contained modern pottery sherds, slate fragments and modern services. Below the rubble fill was natural subsoil. The rubble foundations of the recently demolished extension were also visible. The demolition of the extension revealed that the building facing onto Glebe Streeet was constructed of mass concrete with a likely construction date in the early-mid 20th century.
An area measuring 6m north-south by 5.5m and 0.5-0.6m deep was excavated for the domestic store. Below the topsoil on the surface was natural subsoil. The topsoil contained modern pottery sherds, modern glass fragments and animal bone fragments, some of which were butchered.
Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
