An archaeological assessment (desk-based research, site visit and test trenching) was carried out on the site of a proposed adventure park at the Westport Demesne ‘quarry site’, Westport, Co. Mayo. The assessment identified a previously unrecognised monument, an enclosure, 20m outside the northern edge of the proposed development site in a heavily wooded area. The monument will not be directly impacted by the proposed development. Other parts of the site include the locations of buildings shown on the 1838 Ordnance Survey map and potentially elements of a mill complex shown on earlier maps.
Archaeological testing of part of the site revealed that buildings seen on 19th-century maps have been almost entirely removed, with very little surviving material from this period. A single wall at the edge of the tested area could represent one side of a post-medieval mill tail race. Archaeological monitoring at construction stage was recommended.
