A programme of pre-development test trenching was undertaken at a proposed development area of a dwelling house at Doocastle, Co. Mayo which is partially within the zone of archaeological notification of MA052-003001 Burial Ground and MA052-003002 Ringfort – Rath.
Seven parallel trenches at 10m intervals were mechanically excavated using a graded bucket 1.5m wide in the footprint of the proposed house, driveway to the rear and front, percolation area and the access road. The total area excavated comprised 125.59m of trench.
No archaeological material, other than a stratified chert scraper found in the topsoil, was identified within the proposed development area during the testing trenching.
