An archaeological assessment including testing was carried out in response to a planning requirement for an area proposed for the importation of inert soil and subsoil materials. The development area is located within the townland of Ballyholan. The development site is located on the Eastern side of Ballina town off the N59, on Behy road.
The area for proposed development is on low-lying marshy ground with a small stream orientated north-east/south-west across a portion of the plot. Initial site inspection did not reveal any evidence for archaeological sites within the proposed development area.
Testing was carried out in order to determine if there was any evidence for sub-surface archaeological remains. A total of nine trenches were excavated mechanically across footprint of development area. No evidence for any archaeological finds, features or deposits was encountered.
