An archaeological assessment was requested as part of pre-planning requirements for a site for importation of inert fill materials for agricultural improvement purposes. The development is located within the townland of Ardoughan, at the West side of Ballina, Co. Mayo. The proposed area covers a field of 2.208 hectares.
A desktop study of available documentary sources, a site visit and photographic record of the area to be developed were compiled. Archaeological testing across the development was recommended due its close proximity to two fulachta fiadh (MA030-099---1 and MA030-099---2) to the south-west of the site.
A total of thirteen test trenches were excavated across the proposed development. Testing did not indicate any evidence for archaeological artefacts, deposits or features.
